The Bamako-Dakar-Caravan gains power: Already on Tuesday (25th of Jan)
20 french (Ex-)Sans Papiers arrived in Bamako – many of them have their
origins in Mali. Thus it was quite apt that they suggested a
demonstration in front of the French embassy already for the following
day. Many of the other activists of the caravan thought this to be a
little fast, since most of us didn´t even know each other by that time.
But in the end solidarity prevailed, and about 120 persons met at the
starting point. All went well, even until in front of the fortress-like
embassy. Anyhow (or maybe even because of that) the police started to
disperse the demonstration with tear-gas and clubs. You will find a
video of the action and a Communiqué of the Bamako-Dakar-Caravan here :

>From the 27th to the 29th of Januar the Caravan went north to the
malian-mauritanian border, at the southern fringe of the Sahara desert.
After a march of commemoration for the refugees who lost their lives at
the borders of the European Union in the city of Nioro, 60kms off the
border, we went directly to the border the following day. The background
for this is, that across this border thousands of migrants and refugees
have been deported, after being caught by mauritanian border police
(sponsored by the EU) or having been intercepted by FRONTEX and Co in
their boats. Todasy those deportations have very much decreased, though,
because the routes of migration have changed. The risk of being
intercepted grew too high. One reason for this is also that the
borderpost at Nioro is being watched and controlled by malian and
mauritanian border police, financed by the Ministry of Interior of
Spain. This is a comparatively young phenomena in West-Africa. First
reports and pictures you´ll find here:

Today there was a big rally and a Demonstration in Bamako, together with
the Contonou-Dakar- Caravan, which arrived in Bamako today. Together we
are 400 activists. More reports on this soon at indymedia and on our
website: www.afrique-europe-interact.net

Remains to be mentioned that we are still interested in donations...
you´ll find the contact on our website, too.
